Material: Polypropylene sheet

'Designs of substance is a live project run by the Audi Design Foundation to promote innovative, sustainable design. The initiative challenges undergraduates to look at the reality of life in a specified disadvantaged community and to design a product which could benefit the lives of those people.' - www.designsofsubstance.org

Our brief centered around the South African township of Mdantsane. The schools in Mdantsane have very limited resources and teaching materials. There are insufficient books to go around all the pupils and they don't have equipment like projectors and photocopiers. These factors made learning very difficult for the children of Mdantsane who were keen to go to school and get an education.

I designed a pack of stencils, laser cut from polypropylene sheet, to assist with teaching. Having a stencil means multiples of the same diagrams can be replicated easily. This system would allow every child to have their own copies of teaching materials to keep and take home and support them with their learning.
